'USE OF TOGGLE ROPES' This is a facsimile which has been done from a very rare possibly unique 1944 manual : 'USE OF TOGGLE ROPES' by Sgt John Liddle , Royal Marines . Published 1st Feb 1944 for the 22nd Training Battalion Royal Marines. It is a unit level production clearly done with the Invasion of France in mind .The 1944 original appears to have been done on a mimeograph ( roneo machine ) and unfortunately many of the diagrams are now faint . This means that in this reproduction the diagrams are also faint ( but legible ) though I have done my best to improve the contrast when printing them. It gives full details of the potential usage of the toggle rope along with chapters on knots etc . 33 pages inc 12 full page diagrams / line drawings

CRIMEAN WAR PATRIOTIC ROLLING PIN Rolling Pins of BRISTOL BLUE COBALT GLASS were a token of fidelity and a kind of talisman made in Bristol in the 19thC & purchased by sailors to remind a girl of her fiance' or husband, sailing on the high seas, or in this case off to war against the Russians . They were often decorated with portraits of ships and rhymes. This one has the crossed flags of France and Britain along with the patriotic slogans 'MAY THEY EVER BE UNITED' , 'VIVE 'EMPEREUR' and 'GOD SAVE THE QUEEN', & with the motto 'LOVE & BE TRUE' . There is wear to the pictures but the glass is not cracked or damaged but at the open end , the cork is missing . The 'cork' end is always rough finished but to me it looks as though it could have been chipped here too ... not sure. Length 14.5 inches , with the greatest diameter being 2.5 inches. The open end was to allow you to pour iced water into the rolling pin to give weight and cool the pastry.

Major Toler’s 2 pounder Anti-Tank shell case and recovered round 1940 dated 2 pounder shell case with spent round recovered maybe from battle maybe from a training exercise? Nice display piece and talking point. This is from a large lot of items belonging to the late Major Thomas Ian Jodrell Toler. He served with distinction throughout WW2 being evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940, then becoming Battery Commander of No 1 Air Landing Anti Tank Battery in 1942 and then commanding B Squadron No 1 Wing Glider Pilot Regiment in the Normandy, Arnhem and Rhine campaigns. He successfully swam the Rhine after escaping from Arnhem and was awarded the DFC for his actions. An excellent opportunity to own a real piece of our military history.
Major Toler’s printed Airborne insignia from his working / combat BD blouse Rare set of printed Airborne strips. Very hard to find especially with such historically significant provenance. Might have been used on his Arnhem DFC blouse! Impossible to upgrade. Sold with my original auction invoice. Previously offered with mismatching Pegasus. Now offered alone for a discounted price.
Major Toler’s Shell Dressing from his Arnhem Denison Smock Unused but dirty and battered Shell Dressing dated 1940 removed from the Denison Smock that Major Toler wore at Arnhem. In his personal account of the Battle he describes damage to his Smock after being hit by German mortars which matches perfectly the damage on the Smock I acquired from his estate recently. This Shell Dressing pouch having been removed from this same Smock. A rare chance to acquire a Battle Of Arnhem relic.
Major Toler’s WW2 No 36 Mills hand grenade In rough shape having a section cut from it and missing lever, spring and striker. In Major Toler’s account of the Battle Of Arnhem he states that he still had a hand grenade in his possession. Maybe this was the one? I can’t prove it but it is likely to be a relic of the Battle.

Unique D-Day Killed In Action Parachute Regiment Airborne Forces’ steel helmet More pictures.
Unique D-Day Killed In Action Parachute Regiment Airborne Forces’ steel helmet Very rare opportunity to acquire a D-Day used helmet being the former property of Private Arnold Hargreaves of 13th Battalion who was killed in action on D-Day. BMB made, size 7 1/8, dated 1943. Early yellow sorbo rubber padding, early stitched not riveted straps and original helmet net to exterior which has now fused to the helmet and cannot be removed. Chin cup named to ‘A Hargreaves’. Found in a farm in Normandy in the 1970s. Airborne Forces steel helmets with their original nets are very difficult to find, and being named with D-Day provenance puts this amongst the best. Not much is known concerning what killed Private Hargreaves but some think he was part of a group of Parachute Regiment soldiers which were captured on D-Day and executed that same day by Karl Finkenrath who was himself later tried and executed for war crimes. This link provides some information http://ww2talk.com/index.php?threads/paratroopers-murdered-in-herouvillette.17653/ Information on Para Data site. Private Hargreaves is buried at Ranville War Cemetery.

WW2 100 Torpedo Bomber Squadron RAF lapel badge Scarce George VI King’s Crown example made by Miller and with pin fixing to reverse. 100 Torpedo Bomber Squadron Royal Air Force around skull and crossbones with Malay Motto below meaning ‘Never stir up a hornet’s nest’ From Wikipedia On 15 December 1942, No. 100 Squadron RAF proper was re-formed in the UK, at RAF Grimsby, near Waltham, as a night-time heavy bomber squadron and was part of No. 1 Group RAF, RAF Bomber Command. In January 1943, the squadron received the first of its new complement of Avro Lancasters; the first operation of the squadron was on 4 March 1943 against a U-boat base at St Nazaire. A few days later the squadron was involved in a raid against Nuremberg in Germany and from then on, as part of Bomber Command's strategic role against Germany, took part in every major raid. At the end of 1943, the squadron had completed the second largest number of successful operations of units within No. 1 Group Bomber Command and had the lowest 'loss' rate. On the night of 16/17 December 1943, the squadron received orders to attack Berlin. The raid became known as 'Black Thursday' as Bomber Command lost 25 aircraft on the raid and 28 in crashes at fog-shrouded airfields. That night, 100 Squadron lost their commanding officer, David Holford, who crashed landed approaching RAF Grimsby. On the night of 5 June 1944, the squadron bombed heavy gun batteries in support of the D-Day invasion. For the last month of the war, the squadron moved to Elsham Wolds in Lincolnshire. In the latter stages of the war and post-war, the squadron was involved in the humanitarian Operations Manna and Exodus. At the end of December 1945 the squadron moved to RAF Scampton, being the last squadron on that station to operate the Avro Lancaster The squadron then departed for RAF Lindholme in May, 1946.

This incarnation of the squadron used a wide range of aircraft, starting with the Consolidated Liberator but then adding the Handley Page Halifax, the Westland Lysander and even the Short Stirling for a month late in 1944. This version of the squadron carried out supply drops to resistance groups across the Balkans. After a move to Italy in January 1944 the squadon also began to carry out pick-up missions. The squadron was also used in an unsuccesful attempt to fly supplies to the besieged Poles in Warsaw (the flights themselves succesfully reached Warsaw and were amongst the longest combat missions flow during the war, but in the chaotic circumstances of the urban warfare inside Warsaw the Poles were unable to reach many of the supplies). Cap is private purchase bearing a Lowestoft tailor’s label. King’s Crown bullion and gilt RAF cap badge to front.
