'USE OF TOGGLE ROPES' This is a facsimile which has been done from a very rare possibly unique 1944 manual : 'USE OF TOGGLE ROPES' by Sgt John Liddle , Royal Marines . Published 1st Feb 1944 for the 22nd Training Battalion Royal Marines. It is a unit level production clearly done with the Invasion of France in mind .The 1944 original appears to have been done on a mimeograph ( roneo machine ) and unfortunately many of the diagrams are now faint . This means that in this reproduction the diagrams are also faint ( but legible ) though I have done my best to improve the contrast when printing them. It gives full details of the potential usage of the toggle rope along with chapters on knots etc . 33 pages inc 12 full page diagrams / line drawings

CRIMEAN WAR PATRIOTIC ROLLING PIN Rolling Pins of BRISTOL BLUE COBALT GLASS were a token of fidelity and a kind of talisman made in Bristol in the 19thC & purchased by sailors to remind a girl of her fiance' or husband, sailing on the high seas, or in this case off to war against the Russians . They were often decorated with portraits of ships and rhymes. This one has the crossed flags of France and Britain along with the patriotic slogans 'MAY THEY EVER BE UNITED' , 'VIVE 'EMPEREUR' and 'GOD SAVE THE QUEEN', & with the motto 'LOVE & BE TRUE' . There is wear to the pictures but the glass is not cracked or damaged but at the open end , the cork is missing . The 'cork' end is always rough finished but to me it looks as though it could have been chipped here too ... not sure. Length 14.5 inches , with the greatest diameter being 2.5 inches. The open end was to allow you to pour iced water into the rolling pin to give weight and cool the pastry.

Falklands War worn Denison Smock Falklands War 148 (Meiktila) Commando (AO) Battery RA, Denison smock. This smock is a great example not only because it belonged to a member of 148 Commando RA but also because it is a genuine Falklands War worn Denison which are fairly few and far between with provenance. This Denison is featured in the 'British Airborne Insignia' book by Military Mode Publishing. In an email written by the original owner Stuart Fidler an ex-Royal Naval Officer he states that the smock was first issued to him in 1965 when he was with 148 (Meiktila) Commando (AO) Battery Royal Artillery. He did multiple jumps wearing this smock in both the Far East and also here in the UK. The camouflage print in the images of the veteran clearly matches the smock for sale identically. (I’m not entirely positive whether this date corresponds with the contract number on the smock, perhaps this was issued later) Visible are the early type Royal Navy pattern wings, you'll notice also the earlier style of manufacture/stitching with the horizontal weave to the feathers. What follows is an extract from the original email Stuart sent: "Pleased find attached a couple of pictures of me wearing the Denison smock. The first picture shows me on board a ship (I can’t recall which one) on the way to the Falklands. (I travelled there on the QEII and transhipped at Grytviken to the SS Canberra but the ship I am on in the picture is a warship – I do know that I moved between ships on various occasions although my duties were ashore with 5 Infantry Brigade). I think the second picture was taken on 7th June Darwin and would have been just before embarking on Motor Vessel ARA Monsunen which then sailed at night for Fitzroy arriving the morning following the Skyhawk attacks on RFA Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram." Actually the photograph of Fidler leaning against the railings doesn’t look like a Warship to me but as he suggests he moved a lot, perhaps he is referring to another photograph. HMS Antrim can be seen here in the background in the photographs, she was the flagship of Operation Paraquet, the recovery of South Georgia in April 1982. Also included in the sale are two bring back British 105mm Howitzer shell casings and the SLR bayonet. "The story behind the shells is that a colleague of mine, a Squadron Leader who had been a test pilot on helicopters “found” an abandoned Huey – details can be found at http://www.huey.co.uk/rob_tierney.php One day we decided to take a trip around the battlefields and that was then I picked up the 105 shells. I am afraid I can’t remember where that was but it would have been in the vicinity of Mount Tumbledown . These shells were fired by either 4 Field Regiment or 29 Regiment during the assaults on Mount Tumbledown , Mount William and Sapper 13/14 June 1982." Great opportunity to own a Falklands War worn Denison, I've seen a few photographs of them worn by Royal Marines and Journalists plus heard some of the old sweat Para lads wore them under their windproof smocks but I think even by that time they were few and far between. The zip has broken from the smock but is contained within the pocket. The age and wear of the garment is consistent with an everyday working / combat worn piece.

WW2 Airborne Troops Denison Smock with exceptional provenance PUBLISHED IN 'DENISON' BY BRUCE WILSON PAGES 74 & 75 A pristine example of a 1943 dated CWS Ltd. manufactured first pattern Denison smock. It is nice to see the sizing stamps still visible inside the smock, in this case a Size 4 so the panels/components would be stamped with a '4' making it easy to assemble the right sized components I would imagine. Perhaps the purple stamp on the label could be a Quality Control inspection stamp or perhaps a gas treatment stamp I'm not sure which. There is a name label sewn into the neck 'Mark D Dykes' along with Lieutenant pips. NEWEY half zipper on this smock, stockinette cuff in fantastic condition as is the entire smock inside and out. LIEUTENANT M D DYKES GLASGOW HIGHLANDERS Mark Durward Dykes, who was born in 1919 and who died in May this year, (2000) grew up in Glasgow and was educated at Moray House School and The Glasgow Academy. He joined the Territorial Army in the spring of 1939, enlisting in the 2nd Battalion The Glasgow Highlanders, and was called up to Maryhill Barracks on the 1st of September. Following fieldtraining with the newly-introduced Bren gun, he was selected for the 162nd OCTU at Bulford, Wiltshire. After a period of training in trench-warfare (!), he was commissioned in March 1940 and rejoined 2 Glas H. In May 1940 he briefly went to France to deliver 100 men as reinforcements in the Rouen area. In June 1940 he was transferred to 1 Glas H to command 15 Pl (C Coy). Following an inspection by HM the King, the Battalion went to Cherbourg with 52 Div. This expeditionary force was intended by Churchill to bolster the morale of the retreating French forces but almost resulted in the loss of the Division. When the French forces on either flank surrendered 52 Div was hopelessly exposed. Permission to withdraw was only secured following two calls by General Alanbrooke to Churchill himself. The bulk of the Division’s equipment was lost in the evacuation. (Mark felt unhappy at the risk Churchill had been willing to run and was also unhappy that this episode was largely overlooked in accounts of the early war years. He drew it to the attention of the press near the 50th anniversary of Dunkirk with the result that a significant article on the topic was published in the Scotsman.) In July 1940 Mark’s unit was deployed in defence of East Anglia and Mark’s platoon was stationed at Shudy Camps guarding an ammunition dump. In November the Battalion moved to St Fillans as part of the forces defending Scotland. A highlight of this station during November was the guarding of a crashed bomber carrying sensitive equipment on a training flight from Aldergrove. In June 1941, Mark, now full Lieutenant, took command of the Carrier Platoon, a very mobile force which, armed with Bren guns, was the Battalion’s machine-gun platoon. In an exercise in August the Battalion mounted an attack on Rosyth dockyard and the Combined Operations Headquarters at Pitreavie. “Whilst attention was focussed on Rosyth the carrier platoon executed a coup-de-main on Pitreavie, ‘capturing’ the Admiral and Air Vice Marshal.” The later reward for this notable success was that the entire Battalion was ordered to guard the Pitreavie Headquarters. There it was to remain until the CO of the Glasgow Highlanders, Lieutenant Colonel H M Curteis MC, had designed a new defence scheme for the Headquarters. This scheme was above all to ensure that there could be no enemy coup-de-main even half as successful as Mark’s. But immediately after the assault on Rosyth and Pitreavie the Battalion had been recalled to its billets at Comrie. It was not (as a few assumed) under disgrace. Shortly afterwards Mark’s platoon, together with the rest of the Battalion, was ordered to move under sealed orders. HM the Queen and the two princesses were about to stay at Glamis Castle for a brief rest from the “blitz” being launched on London, and the Glasgow Highlanders had been chosen to guard the Royal party. (During her visit the Queen not only invited the CO, 2IC and Adjutant to tea but decreed that the Battalion’s officers could have hot baths in the Castle. That was not all. Before the Queen left she asked to see the whole battalion on parade. HM the Queen and the two princesses then inspected the Battalion and took the salute as the companies marched past.) In the following months the Battalion made various moves round Scotland. In Perthshire on one occasion Mark was returning to his billet in Crieff Hydro late one evening when his car backfired. The guard was swiftly turned out. In mid-1942 Mark became Bn IO, this in between various types of training - on carriers and machine-gunnery; on the role of the messing officer; at battle school; and in mountain training. Indeed, the Battalion trained for a mountain warfare role throughout 1943, culminating that winter in how to operate on snowshoes. Near D-day however, 52 Div shed some of its kit: and instead prepared for an “air-transportable” role. In the autumn of 1944 the Division were in position on an airfield in Spilsby, Lincolnshire being briefed to go to Arnhem. Unfortunately it could not be sent to reinforce Roy Urquhart’s First Airborne: the intended landing-area, the airfield at Deelen, had not been captured. Thereupon, the somewhat disappointed (and still lightly-equipped) Division assumed a “conventional” infantry role. Not only that; after landing at Ostend the mountain-trained Division went into action below sea-level. It was not very long after the landing that Mark took temporary shelter in a village bistro, and there his CO, the late Lieutenant Colonel W I French, noted that he was improperly dressed. “Mr Dykes,” commanded Colonel Willie, “put your steel helmet on. There is hostile shell-fire outside.” Soon 52 Div advanced into the Netherlands - to take part in the Battle of the Scheldt. 1 Glas H was part of the forces sent to attack the Island of Walcheren. The Battalion was initially ordered to advance along a narrow and heavily-defended causeway - the Sloedam - leading to the town of Arnemuiden. The battle for the Causeway, which had already resulted in considerable Canadian casualties, continued to be a costly venture but nevertheless the Battalion established a bridgehead. Eventually the 6th Cameronians and the 5th HLI crossed the Sloe Channel in assault boats and tied up with 1 Glas H. On the 5th of November the Germans in Arnemuiden surrendered. The Battle for the Rhineland followed, and then the Rhine Crossings. The Glasgow Highlander’s final objective was Bremen. It was captured on the 25th of April 1945. The War in Europe ended a week later. Sheltering in a basement during the liberation of Arnemuiden was a three-year-old boy named Frans de Nooijer. As he grew up, Frans became interested in the history of the Liberation and, noticing that the memorial of the 52nd Division’s marsh crossing had been moved, he personally restored it to its original site. Frans was also prominent in the activities of the local Liberation Committee. This body organised annual remembrance ceremonies and also hospitality for visiting representatives of the liberating forces. Mark became acquainted with Frans in the course of attending some of these ceremonies from about 1985 onwards, and ten years later he lent his weight to a campaign for recognition for Frans. Mark did not do things by halves. He wrote to, amongst others, HM the Queen, HM the Queen of the Netherlands, HM the Queen Mother, HRH the Princess Margaret, the Prime Minister, the Dutch Ambassador, the British Ambassador to the Netherlands, the Secretary of State for Defence and the GOC Army in Scotland. The result was that Frans was awarded an Honorary MBE. Frans was present at Mark’s 80th birthday party in 1999, and astonished the company (and the band) by bringing out no less than three verses of “By yon bonny banks” - picked up through regular contact with Scottish veterans. Demobbed in 1945, Mark had returned to the family business which was successfully developed over the years. He married Marguerite in 1950 and had a son and daughter. A social man, Mark was involved throughout his life in a variety of activities. He was for many years treasurer of his church and was in the Glasgow Trades House a member of the Hammermen. In addition, he was for some years a director of the Ironmongery and Steel Trades Benevolent Association, an office-bearer in the National Association of Steel Stockholders and President of the Govan Rotary Club. In 1980 Mark married a second time. He spent the last years of his business life in Nottingham but in his retirement, and after the death of Lillian his wife, returned to Glasgow - where from time to time he attended the Wednesday Luncheons at RHQ. He also loved travel, classical culture, golf and powerful cars, and he had a strong sense of history and tradition. Particularly in his later years he was keen to re-kindle past friendships, organising an association for retired steel stockholders and re-unions for his primary school class of 1928. A generous man, and an enthusiast for life, Mark readily inspired affection in his many friends and acquaintances. In 1985 Mark gifted a plaque to hang in the Town Hall at Arnemuiden. Between the badges of the Division and the Battalion it bears an inscription in Dutch and in English: “Presented to the Town of Arnemuiden To commemorate its liberation on 5th November 1944 By 1st Battalion the Glasgow Highlanders Following the Battle of the Causeway As a token of lasting friendship On the fortieth anniversary of the ending of the war in Europe And in everlasting memory of those who gave their lives for Freedom” Mark was fortunately not one of those that gave their lives for Freedom, but he spent six long years of his life fighting for it and he spent many more ensuring that those who paid the ultimate price for Freedom were not forgotten. We shall miss him.

WW2 Glider Pilots’ Denison Smock and Helmet More images of smock.
WW2 Glider Pilots’ Denison Smock and Helmet PUBLISHED IN 'DENISON' BY BRUCE WILSON PAGES 82 & 83 Very rare opportunity to purchase an original Glider Pilots' first pattern Denison smock and C Type flying helmet named and numbered to Matthew Leighton-Hall who served as a Glider Pilot from 1942 to 1944. Smock is made by Hoffman & Sons, size 3, dated 1942 with various interesting additions and modifications including: - Sidcot flying suit detachable collar - yellow epaulette tape to left shoulder strap - Army Flying badge/Glider Pilots' wing to breast This very well preserved example being made by Hoffman & Sons is in my opinion superior to smocks of many other manufacturers being of a much finer and tighter weave material. It has a semi polished appearance and its water repellant qualities are a little better than your average smock. The smock was originally purchased from the family and comes with Leighton-Hall's C Type flying helmet, which was often favoured by Glider Pilots. The overall condition of the smock is very good and complete with intact tail, buttons, cuffs and zip. The colours are bright and the smock is very much a piece ideal for a mannequin or display. There is a little service wear/damage to the lower left sleeve which appears to be an oil like burn, typical of an item of clothing worn in the field of aviation.

The unit did not wear a cap badge as such but while serving in 2nd Special Service Battalion they wore a black hackle in a khaki Balmoral hat. When the Special Service Battalions were re-organized in March 1941, the unit reverted to its 9 Commando title, retaining the Balmoral and black hackle. The hackle was transferred to the green beret when the latter was adopted in 1942. These are genuine old WW2 stock and NOT more modern examples! Very small number available (three now left).
